New Pastry on the Block

I had these for dessert today. OH MY GOSH!!!! Its almost like having gone to heaven and back. Absolutely so smacking-licking GOOD!!! So yummy I almost wanted to keep them all to myself. Hah!

Had dropped by Paragon today for the eye check-up. Then after the rather short review, I decided to visit the new Canele Pastry shop located at the basement to see what stuffs they sell. Had long heard about their legendary colourful macarons, and thought must try lah. Cos I had signed up for a Macaron baking class in May (which cost me BOMB, first time I'm attending a 3 hour course which cost me a 3 figure sum), and I felt I should get a taste of the real ones to set my targets right lah. A macaron (as defined by Wikipedia) is a traditional French pastry, made up of 2 dome halves sandwiched together by a sweet filling. There are like thousands of different flavours for both the domes and fillings, ranging from chocolate, vanilla, green tea, raspberry, strawberry, coffee, caramel, pistachio etc. The reason behind the attraction of this pastry, is that its "delicately crunchy on the outside, yet moist and chewy on the inside".

Countless recipes for the macarons can be found easily on the web, but its reputed to be one of the most difficult pastries to bake. Every ingredient and step has to be correct for a perfect dome to appear. I've heard how many bakers went through many many tries before they got it right at the end. Hence, to cut short the process for me, I decided to fork out $$$ to learn straight from the experts lah.

There are not many places in Singapore which sell macarons, which is why I gathered Canele can priced theirs at such exhorbitant rates. I bought a box of 10, at a freaking $21.70. Each macaron is so tiny, I could fit one into my mouth right away. But of course, given that each cost around 2 bucks, most of us took at least 5 mouthfuls to finish the pastry. Must make it last longer. Heh! And when I master the recipe, hmmm....I'll be able to make some for my family to try. I'm 100% sure it'll be cheaper, but cannot guarantee the quality lah.

This is the first time I've heard of macaron... but it sure sounds delicious. Once you master the skill, maybe can set up shop to break the Canele monopoly! :D
