Not customer focused....only product oriented

Gawd.....I'm sooooo dead tired these few days. Every morning, I have to literally drag myself out of bed and my eyes are like, so difficult to open. Kept having many many dreams these few days, and so sleep was really scarce. But still, I MUST MUST blog about this 'memorable' incident which occured yesterday night. Had actually wanted to blog right after the experience one, but was too agitated to do so.

Months ago, I had donated ten bucks to Community Chest, and it was through this lady who had knocked on my door to ask for the donations. I had really almost forgot all about it, until yesterday night, right in the middle of my flute practice, she called me and asked if it was ok for her to come over then. She added that because I had made the donation, I was now entitled to get a small teddy bear, courtesy of Comm Chest (or so, I had believed). At first, I was like, aiyah...no need lah....can donate it back to the kids lor. But she kind of insisted and further said she was also giving out the bears to all the donors at my block, so 顺便 give me lor. Okay, I said.

She arrived, and since I though she just had to hand the bear to me, I did not bother to open the gate lah. The lady then said she also needed me to sign some form to indicate that I've received the bear....so I proceeded to unlock my main gate (but I was still thinking then, that even if need to sign the form, can just pass over through the gate lah...paper only mah). She came in with a few bags, containing what I believed were the bears and we both sat down at my dining table.

After signing the mentioned forms, I had wanted to lead her out of my house and continue with the flute practice. Then out of nowhere, she suddenly WHIPPED OUT this piece of A4 size laminated brochure and happily proceeded to brief me about this particular SAVINGS PLAN! You get that? Give teddy bear....then talk about savings plan....NO RELATIONSHIP AT ALL LOR!!! She just kept yakking about the low bank interest rates, and how this plan can help me earn more money and blah blah blah blah. My mind was an absolute blank at that point of time...I was more like...WHAT THE HELL??

I then stopped her and asked, exactly which company she was representing. And it was then I realised lah....NO WONDER. One of those local insurance company.....and which she had conveniently neglected to inform me on the phone earlier on. But the part of the conversation which pissed me off the most was,

Me: Sorry, but I'm already participating in some similar program and have no extra money to go around

She: Erm, then you can consider using your CPF for this plan lah...I can help you arrange

Me: But what if I need to use my CPF for any house loans next time?

She: (the best part) Har? You got boyfriend liao meh? You so young, don't get married so early lah! Nowadays got so many divorces and unhappy marriages!!

Wah lau eh...you tell me how not to get offended with this type of people? I wonder what the government will say to her man....here they are trying to get more people hitched and have kids, and there this woman is getting people to NOT get married, so she can sell her plan successfully. WTH?? Xiao eh! At that point, I was like near to telling her straight to get out of my house right away. But being the nice person I am, I just said that I didn't think its right she did not mention earlier that she was coming to talk about this plan, and had used the bear excuse to step into my house. Come on lah, its so late already, she still want to impose upon people's resting time to sell stuffs? Plus, she had not even bother to ask if it was convenient for me to talk about this type of personal issue!

Then she got a bit flustered and came up with the excuse that it was a bit complex to mention it on the phone, and anyway, many housewives had found this plan very attractive and had all signed up with her. Still say like she's right! But I stood my ground and made it quite clear that she should leave right then. Then of course she got slightly embarassed and left hastily lah.

When I was later thinking through if I had been too 过分 towards the woman, my sis, who had witnessed the entire incident, said "Hallo zeh, I think you were being too gentle liao lor. If it was me, I would scolded her long time ago liao. No question about it! How can be so inconsiderate one...use this type of lame way to get into people's house and sell plan! This type of salepeople is so darn product oriented. They only care about selling their products, and do not care if their customers need it or not. Cannot make it!"

This is so true man. But what an experience! Now I don't even dare to 乱乱 give donations liao. Scary....

A) Let me teach you the right way to make a donation.
Say NO to
1) floating cans (ERP-alike?),
2) TV charity shows (the intermediaries like Mediacorp, advertising firms, SPH, Telcos make so much $)
3) people selling gift packs etc to raise funds (a high % of the $ goes to the manufacturers/distributors)
4) donation cards / tickets / funfair etc
Just write a cheque to the charity you like in your personal name and give your IC no.
Do a good deed, maximise your donations by leaving out the intermediaries & you enjoy double tax deductions.

B) Make sure you get a good financial advisor/planner. Not the fly-by-night type who don't consider your personal needs.

C) And yes, I hate pple who makes use of an innocent, cute-looking teddy bear.

Wah... this girl really too much hor? Most probably, I will also react the same way as you. I feel that there's no pt to scream at pple, just politely refuse them is better to make a big fuss. Just as long you stood by your decision, that's good enough. Do I make sense? Heez...

reading your incident makes me wonder if the first $10 really did go into charity... and if i were you, i will take her name card ( if you manage to get her name card) and complain to both Com Chest (how can let them have your particulars to cross sell insurance products) and the insurance company (did not tell you that they are selling 'savings plans' in the first place). And if i'm in a really bad mood, i'll write to the Straits Times Forum page to let others know about such selling tactics as well.
