Singapura, My Sunny Island

Wah...today I've been fed with so many national day songs from Yes933, I swear I can memorise all the song lyrics liao. But its been swell, cos they reminded me so much of my Primary school days, where we were all made to perform the songs EVERY year, and must remember the dance steps as well! That's why till now, I can still sing Muneru Valiba (the entire song, no less!) without looking at the lyrics and dance the indian steps at the same time. The impressive thing? I learnt that in Pri 4!

One of the 933 DJs remarked that since 1999, it seems that the new National Day songs became more and more hip each year, and even got local pop stars to endorse them! In the past, where got such thing right? All we had was some cassette recording of some choir singing the songs, and we would practise according to what's in there. But I still prefer the old 80s national day songs....they sound so PATRIOTIC!! The lyrics were so simple, even I could understand them when I was in Pri Sch, and I feel that is what national day songs should be! Easily understood by people of all ages and class, and melodies which are so catchy, you can hum them the 2nd time you hear it.

Whenever I go for those NDP previews (ok, only twice lar actually), my FAVOURITE is always the last part, where everyone present stands up and sing the old National Day songs together, and we recite the pledge loudly and finally, sing the National Anthem with so much gusto and pride. No one had to nudge the people to participate....everyone just on auto mode will join in the singing (cos everyone KNOWS the lyrics so well!). And although its always the same old songs, like Count on me singapore, One People One Nation One Singapore, Stand Up Singapore and my favourite, We are Singapore, no one can ever resist not singing them. Its that spontaneous!!

And yar, although its so cliche to say this on our National Day eve, I do still want to declare that...I LOVE U SINGAPORE!! No matter what other people say about you, that you are too clean, too strict, too boring, too etc etc.....nowhere else will ever be as HOME to me as Singapore is. You are great to me, just the way you are, my Forever Sunny Island!
