First piano lesson

First piano lesson...

Yesterday, I gave my first money-earning piano lesson. Hah...felt quite good to be able to finally get some $$$ in return for my many torturous years of practising, exams, unnecessary stress, etc etc. But anyway, I didn't exactly charge a lot for each lesson, cos firstly, I felt I didn't have the nec qualifications to ask for a lot (as least certainly not as much as what the music schools would charge), and secondly, I treated these lessons more of as an activity of leisure, and not another income-producing source. In the past, the idea of teaching piano would never have crossed my mind, cos I always thought of myself as a lousy teacher. However, after giving a few lessons to my colleague who needed to learn music so that she could sing better during her church choir sessions, I was quite surprised at how satisfying I felt it was! Esp when I saw how my colleague was quite ecstatic when she could finally produce some music from the piano, it felt like I was suddenly empowered with the ability to fulfil this long-awaited dream of hers!

It was then I thought...hey...why not I market my piano lessons, to this interesting group of targeted audience.....people (or rather, adults), who had a secret ambition to learn piano, more for leisure and with the ultimate dream of being able to play their fav tunes, but didn't want to go through the stress of going for exams. I shared this idea with a couple of friends and colleagues, and it was then I found out.....this market is actually quite big! There were people who wanted exactly what I could offer!

And so, here I am, in my part-time job and best of all, enjoying every moment of it, and earning some wai kuai as well! My only worry, is that I'm still not too sure of the best way to teach beginner adults....most of what I did were stuffs gleaned from library books and the internet. I only hope the results of my teaching methods will be as satisfying as the process itself. And to make sure I'm able to answer all the questions posed to me by my students (feels good to say 'my students' hee hee), I have also started going through all my past piano textbooks to update myself on the principles and music terms. Now I know its not that easy being a teacher in any sense....you really got to be very informed in the subject you teach!
