Alone doesn't mean lonely..

Alone doesn't mean lonely.....

Read an article on ST Monday, where the author wrote on the unexpected joys of going on a solo trip to some resort for the first time. In the article, she highlighted the interesting fact that most of us would rather die than be seen doing certain activities alone, such as eating alone in a restaurant (be it MacDonald or a posh restaurant), watching movies, etc etc. Most of us, if we were to know we would be deprived of our usual lunch mates for any particular day, I'm sure we wouldn't hesitate to da bao and eat in our office, rather than be seen eating alone in the canteen or nearby food court. That much is true for me, at least. Even during my hostel days, I would never never eat anywhere alone....da bao-ing was the fad in those days....except during exam periods lah....when 'da bao' becomes a taboo phrase to all who doesn't want to repeat any subjects.

But I beg to differ when it comes to other activities. I certainly have no qualms watching movies alone...in fact, I quite enjoy it!!! This is especially the case, when I cannot find someone who also want to watch the same movies as me.....funny leh....i sometimes wonder if my movie taste is weird...cos there were some shows where I simply cannot find any 'zhi yin' to watch with! Examples of movies I watched alone include Emma (very long ago show, lead actress was Gwyneth Paltrow, I think), Legally Blond, Tomb Raider, Titanic. Ok, fair to say that the reason I watched Titanic alone was becos all my friends had watched it already. I certainly would not have spend $6 watching it on a weekday afternoon (after my lessons) if my Business Law tutor had not insisted that all his students must watch the movie, as he would be discussing the details in class. Till today, I still cannot see how the movie relates to all the business law principles we had to memorise during our lessons. Xiao!

I definitely prefer to go for my aerobics lessons alone. For one, its difficult to find a slot which fits both me and my other aerobics-going friends, and secondly, what'ya need a partner for aerobics for??? There's practically no time for talking during classes, and I like to come and go whenever I please. As for the all-time girls fav activity (i meant shopping lah).....I have no preference whether doing it with a pal, or alone. I find that sometimes, I can think better and make better decisions when I'm alone...less distractions. But of course, there are also times when I need another person's opinion as to what colour skirt I should get, or if the brooch I'm eyeing is too eye-catching. But basically, I do enjoy, very very much, the moments I spend with myself. Its like I'm getting to know more of what I like, need, love and how I can better improve the way I do stuffs. But of course, I enjoy company too. Esp for travelling, I cannot imagine doing it alone. Its sounds quite depressing......but I did encounter this lady who went on the Turkey package all by herself! So cool huh! And b4 Turkey, she also toured New York F&E all by herself!! I think it really takes some guts to do some activities alone. But after seeing live examples of people I know who travel alone, I'm already slightly persuaded by the idea liao! Hmmm.....mabbe my next trip will be my first solo trip??
