Health worry
Health worry
Went for the free health screening this morning, and was told my cholesterol levels were quite unhealthy and that I should go for a complete fasting lipid testing to get a more complete cholesterol check. Wah...quite scary man, after hearing this! I know my cholesterol level has always been borderline healthy, but this one hits a new high! Funny thing was, my weight and body fats were reduced (as compared to last year's readings). Which means, cannot only depend on exercise alone to maintain health....must also watch diet carefully. Actually, I thought I was already being quite strict in my diet, refraining from fast food, choc, ice-cream and even going without bak-kwa (one of my fav foods!). But I gotta admit I still like taking meats and seafood far too much. Guess my diet will need to go for a complete change after this....their diet recommendations for me were:
a) limit consumption of egg yolks to 3 or less per week
b) limit consumption of organ meat (sadly, also one of my fav) to once per month and keep it to small portions
c) consume no more than than 2 palm sized portions of fish/chicken/meat per day (I think i take 2 palm sized portions of meat per meal)
d) limit consumption of seafood (e.g. prawns, squid, cuttlefish, lobster, abalone, crabs) to twice a week and keep it to small portions
e) minimise consumption of fish and crab roe.
I was also told tofu and taukwa are good diet replacements for meats. Another interesting fact I learnt today was (funny how it seems you start to learn all these only when you get the condition yourself) that the amount and type of fats one consumes has a even stronger effect on one's cholesterol level than the cholesterol which one consumes. Hmmm......
Think I better get the lipid test done, to see the ratio of good and bad cholesterol in me. Hopefully I have more good than bad cholesterol, and that the good cholesterol level was the reason I had a high total cholesterol reading today. This is really quite depressing...I don't want to die from clogged arteries.....this is a sad sad blog......
